Brainstorming my way out of this maelstrom, pt. 1

Any ideas. Many of which will be great. Let's go.

Reading Books

  • I spend a lot of my time creating and doing online. Editing takes place on the computer. Narration takes place on the computer. Writing takes place on the computer. That is PLENTY.
  • I need to guard my brain against junk. Much of what is online is junk. Therefore, an idea I have is to limit what I read to print, or at most, what I have on my Kindle. Ads need to get the fuck out.
  • Print is my friend. So let's invest in print.
    • Do I love a book? Buy it.
    • Do I want to invest in a great book? Buy it...and buy the best copy available.
    • Do I merely like a book? Buy it from a thrift store or from Thriftbooks.
    • Is a book I want older than the US copyright limit, and am I okay with having it available on my Kindle? (That limit is about 100 years, so as of now, that includes books published before 1925.) Download it from Project Gutenberg.
    • Am I just wanting to check a book out to see if I like it? Then, uh, do that. Literally. Check the book out from the library.
  • What about news? That may have to wait. I'm not sure yet what to do about that. I subscribe to the New York Times, which I'm liking less every day. I wonder if I can use the Kindle to read magazines or newspapers without ads. (Update: Signs point to no.)
  • Since I'm reading books, I need to devote time to actually reading every day. Sit myself down and read. And enjoy it. (Do I sound like I'm gritting my teeth as I say this? Maybe!) But seriously...I can get books I like.
  • And let's read things that reflect my desire to protect my brain. Things that reflect my philosophy. Neil Postman comes immediately to mind. Stuff about neurochemistry and the like.
  • But also under the rubric of fun, how about Kevin Kwan: the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy? I LOVED that series. I should have that.
  • And let's make a game out of it if we can. Damn me for asking Dennis to bring SuperBetter: The Power of Living Gamefully by Jane McGonigal to the desert so I could read it...then me ignoring it and not bringing it back with me to Denver. Oh well.
  • But how to find books I might like? Who knows?
