Check-in today

Day's just begun, but let's go.

Began today with a big chug of a pint of water after weighing myself. That was a good idea, and one I think I'll implement from here forward. Got things, uh, moving.

Next came a walk. Also good. Felt good to get and keep the blood moving. I'm hoping today involves some lifting of some sort.

Currently having some cold-brewed pu-erh. Took looseleaf tea that I made two cups from yesterday, and just put it in cold water in the fridge overnight. I can't say the taste is all that great (might be better with another type of tea), and it's sitting in my stomach a little, so may be the tannins are too much, but it's worth a try. I've done this before with some other tea and it was delightful. Actually, I think it was with the Prince of Peace pu-erh. So...good to know for the future. So far, little caffeine today but good energy.

Sarah Banks (from my mastermind group) recommended the book Indistractible as a means to get myself off of phone screens. I might well get that in one form or another.

I read a short story by Faulkner last night: "A Justice." I found I had to read it aloud to really understand it, and I'm glad I did. It was very repetitive, yet also a bit difficult to follow. As one astute essayist wrote, "Faulkner often requires the reader to infer why something is happening, to induce concentration on meaning." And I don't get written inferences easily, as my middle school literature teacher evaluations repeatedly pointed out. It took this essay to bring some things to the fore so I could understand it better. And that's fine. If I don't get something the first time, I'm happy to rely on the more studied minds around to point things out to me.

Oh, and why Faulkner? Well, dear reader, because it was there. I got a used collection of his works at my cousin's wedding in upstate New York years ago, and aside from enticing me once or twice to read "A Rose for Emily," it has sat there patiently on the bookshelf. I have a lot of books I haven't touched for one reason or another (looking at you, Infinite Jest), or put aside similarly (The Mayor of Casterbridge beckons). Reading fiction works like those isn't neglecting my need to read serious works. It's sharpening my mind because it requires me to sit and concentrate on the written word more while imagining what is happening in my mind's eye.

Otherwise, yesterday was a bit of a wash. I started the day picking weeds, which was great. Then I rubbed my left eye with a sap-stained hand and spent the rest of the day with an irritated, teary eye that kept me from really good work. Only a midday shower somewhat helped.

Anyhow, it's time to continue on with more work. Despite the sap issue, it was a good day.
