
Though I hate that type of usage, this could be a huge game changer for me.
A few weeks ago, I came across a Substack post about lecithin, and about how one person (yes, n=1) was tremendously healthy. His secret? Lecithin. Great cholesterol, looked great, tons of energy, brain function excellent, looked surprisingly young for his age, which was advanced...you know, all the usuals. Not sure why it stuck in my brain, but I decided to research it a bit.
After a bit, I saw some evidence that pointed to its benefits in reducing fatty liver disease. To be exact, it was a study on elderly people who had been on prolonged parenteral nutrition, many of whom had developed fatty liver. Turns out that supplementing with choline did the trick. All study cohorts who had fatty liver before choline had it resolve by the end of the study, six weeks later. Pretty impressive. But what's the link between choline and lecithin?
Well, lecithin contains a number of phosphatides, the main one being phosphatidylcholine. As you can imagine, it's a precursor to choline. But I'm sure the study wanted to concentrate on just plain ol' choline...maybe it was seen as the most direct way to address fatty liver.
At any rate, a bit more searching—and this article in particular by a fellow naturopathic doctor—made me more compelled to consider supplementation with lecithin. So I got a container of horse pills (each one containing 1.25 g of lecithin), and began taking it. Effects were subtle but noticeable. From a Chinese medicine standpoint, I noticed that the perpetual coating on my tongue was fading significantly...even the stubborn area at the base of my tongue, somewhat. Energy was fine. I did notice some minor, transient RUQ pain from time to time while taking it; I'll still manage it. But it's worth continuing, I feel.
More interesting, when I flew back to Denver from Palm Springs on this last trip, I realized I did not have lecithin with me. Thought about getting some, but decided against it, since it was a short trip. Well, these past few days without it have brought out more sluggishness, both brain and digestive-wise. I had a good dinner last night, then topped it off with cookies dipped in whipped cream, and woke up sluggish and nearly feeling hungover. Felt like my liver—one of the body's filtration systems—was really struggling. So I'm looking forward to returning to Palm Springs tonight and popping a lecithin capsule immediately. In fact, I may double my dose to see what happens in the future. I think this might be a tremendous help, the likes of which may render my experience with botanicals and cell salts small beans. (And that was an absolute joy of a discovery.)
More later on its mechanism of action—I have recording and other work to do—but suffice it to say that this is a very exciting discovery. (And again, as per my MO, this light shall be kept under a bushel, for my benefit alone.)
