A new, blatantly obvious pastime has opened up.
Wasting no time about it:
- Carefree Highway – Gordon Lightfoot
- Elephant – Jason Isbell
- Dear Someone – Gillian Welch
- Everything Put Together Falls Apart – Paul Simon
- Hotter Than Mojave in My Heart – Iris DeMent
- Sonora's Death Row – Robert Earl Keen
- Kiko and the Lavender Moon – Los Lobos
- Love Sneakin' Up On You – Bonnie Raitt
- Long Long Time – Linda Ronstadt
- Alone Again Or – Love
- Classical Gas – Mason Williams
So that was this afternoon's DJ session. It was a definite mood. Very folk, very '70s-based. Check songs 4–6...there's the summer of 1994 right there in full blast. I've never heard the Gillian Welch or the Los Lobos before, so that was nice to hear. Both good songs, but the Los Lobos was not exactly what I was expecting. Certainly not "La Bamba," that's for sure. And I didn't recognize the Linda Ronstadt title, but once it started playing, I totally remembered it.
That was fun. I've been doing that a bit lately. Here's another set I did one night, all women:
- Boss Bitch – Doja Cat
- Big Time Sensuality (The Fluke Minimix) – Bjork
- Show Me Love (Radio Edit) – Robin S.
- Ever Again – Robyn
- Don't Shut Me Down – ABBA
- Jump – Madonna
- Born to Die – Lana Del Rey
- Mysterons – Portishead
- Dress – PJ Harvey
- She's My Baby – Mazzy Star
- Possibly Maybe – Bjork
Another short one, very Motown-themed (with a non sequitur at the end):
- Town Called Malice – The Jam
- Good Thing – Fine Young Cannibals
- Too Many Fish In the Sea – The Marvelettes
- Mother Popcorn (Single Version) – James Brown
- One Mint Julep – Ray Charles
And then a very mellow, classical-based one:
- Nocturne No. 1, Op. 9 No. 1 – Frederic Chopin (Daniel Barenboim, pianist)
- The Art Teacher – Rufus Wainwright
- Cinnamon Girl – Lana Del Rey
- Current – Phoria
- Requiem – Eliza Gilkyson (Conspirare, choir)
- Quanta Qualia – Patrick Hawes
- Ave Maria (Op. 52, No. 6) – Franz Schubert (Chanticleer, choir)
So,. yeah. Here's what happens when I decide to go off and become a DJ who answers to no one except myself. It's fun. I'll be doing this more.
