Tricky technology

So here's a thought for ya.

Apologies. Despite having a good solid eight overnight and a few cups of coffee in me, I'm still tired and the brain isn't braining as it should. Anyhow...

It's wild how much we are tied into our phones these days. For me, I've been dwelling on the idea that it's a lot easier to just live experiences through the phone than to actually experience them in real life. And it's easy to justify it. The cost? Possibly exorbitant. The hassle? Too much. The time involved? Can't handle it. I've got a job, right? And the freaky part? The brain actually gets as much positive stimulus from this vicarious living as it does from real experiences. In some cases, even more. (And yes, it would be good to cite a study here.)

It's a bit frightening, actually. Really encourages sloth in those who might be prone to it. *sheepishly raises hand* I mean, I have a tendency to be easily hypnotized, so...yes. That's it. Another reason for me to get away from phones.

However. I need to get back to the lessons from Indistractable, which is that distraction is basically a response to discomfort, and that to deal with it, you have to get...uh...comfortable with discomfort. Or maybe I'm misstating it, but that does seem to be the gist of it. I'll have to bring this book and workbook with me back to Palm Springs today. So our majority Palm Springs season starts; Dennis and Mark are already down there.

In the meantime, five auditions for a single multicast audiobook project done yesterday! This is for a fantasy book based on a Ukrainian folk story! Another one for a different, nonfiction book today. I enjoy the process...it's challenging, especially if I'm coming up with different voices. I'm curious to see if anything happens out of it.
